The Booker Prize Foundation has revealed the six books on the 2026 shortlist. The prize, the UK’s most prestigious literary honour, celebrates longform fiction written in English and published in Britain and Ireland between October 2025 and September 2026. This year’s judges are Mary Beard (Chair), Raymond Antrobus, Jarvis Cocker, Rebecca Liu, and Patricia Lockwood.
Each shortlisted author receives £2,500. The winner takes £50,000, plus the usual stream of book sales and bragging rights. The winner will be announced at a ceremony on November 9.

The list moves across fiction that covers a wide range of tone. It includes the hilarious and the discomfiting, the frighteningly strange and the alarmingly domestic, the powerfully shocking and the intriguingly understated.
The authors also range across time and place. Characters come from different countries and different centuries, and the novels were created by authors 40 years apart. The shortlist pairs new talent with well-known favourites, though the judges did not name which authors fall into each category.
What the Chair Actually Said
Mary Beard, who chairs the judges, made a striking statement in the announcement. “We did not start out with a checklist of the different types of book we wanted to see represented in the final six, or the kinds of authors or subject matter,” she said.
Then she spent the rest of her remarks describing exactly what the judges had ended up with. “When we looked at the lineup of our shortlist, neatly propped up against one another, almost glowing, we were happy that we had showcased many of the strengths of contemporary English language fiction,” she continued.
The statement is worth reading closely. Beard says the judges did not look for balance — and then describes a shortlist that balances everything she could want. That is a delightfully contradictory read. It suggests the judges let the books find them rather than the other way around.
