Fifty-three years after Disney released its beloved animated take on the Robin Hood legend, the studio is bringing the outlaw back — but this time as a comic book series. The new Robin Hood series comes from Dynamite Entertainment, in partnership with Disney, and it features Eisner Award-nominated writer Nate Cosby, Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman, and illustrator Alessandro Ranaldi.

The series is set for release in November, with the first issue arriving on November 11, 2026. The second issue follows on December 9, 2026. Cover art will come from a roster of A-list artists, including Joshua Middleton, David Nakayama, Nathan Szerdy, and “two of comics’ greatest archer-related artists, Phil Hester and David Aja!”

The Legend Behind the Series

The 1973 Robin Hood animated film remains a cult favorite thanks to its brilliant reimagining of the well-known characters as animals. The comedic take on the classic Robin Hood legend helped it stand out from previous adaptations and retellings. It also falls within the peak of Disney’s classic animation style, which defined a multi-decade era of the company’s animation and which is largely missed by many fans.

Now, fans have something to look forward to with the announcement of a new Robin Hood series. Based on the early preview, it seems the artists bringing this tale to life will largely stay true to the classic art style.

The Creative Team Behind It

Nate Cosby brings experience from his work on Cheetara: Worldbreaker, and he is Eisner Award-nominated for his writing. Greg Weisman created Gargoyles. He joins Cosby on the writing side of this project.

Illustrator Alessandro Ranaldi brings Zootopia to his portfolio. The three together form a team with a strong track record across animation and comics.

The Artists Giving It Covers

Cover art for the series will be provided by a group of top-tier artists. Joshua Middleton, David Nakayama, and Nathan Szerdy are all named among the contributors. The announcement also singles out two artists specifically for their work with bows and arrows: Phil Hester and David Aja.

The Issue Schedule and Price

The series will debut with a 32-page first issue, priced at $4.99. Issue #1 is set for November 11, 2026, with issue #2 following shortly after on December 9, 2026. Dynamite has not announced an official issue count for the series, suggesting it is planned as an ongoing series.

The official synopsis describes a first chapter of “never-told-but-completely-true stories” of the world’s most famous archer. It follows the animal kingdom’s version of the legend, set in Sherwood Forest.

The Story’s Framing

The synopsis opens with a heap of legends and tall tales about Robin Hood, noting that all versions are different. It then introduces the animal kingdom’s version, calling it the story of what really happened in Sherwood Forest.

In this first chapter, ol’ Robin Hood gets himself in a heap of trouble by breaking into mean ol’ Prince John’s castle everyday for a week. Nobody can figure out what Robin’s been stealing. When Prince John finds out what’s missing, the synopsis ends with a wooooooooo boy.

The framing suggests a series of standalone stories rather than one continuous narrative. Describing them as “never-told-but-completely-true stories” could indicate that each issue tells a separate tale. If so, this could allow stories set before, during, and after the movie’s events.

The Early Art Preview

An early three-page interior art preview has surfaced online. The preview appears to confirm a return to the classic Disney animated art style. This visual confirmation is a key part of the package, as fans of the original film will want to see the new series hold onto the distinctive look that made the movie memorable.

The preview shows the animal characters in a style that echoes the 1973 film’s animation. It is a small taste of what readers can expect when the issues arrive later this year.

What This Means for Fans

For longtime fans, this is a welcome return to a property they have cherished for decades. The creative team’s combined work in animation and comics gives the project a solid foundation. The cover artists alone bring a wide range of styles to the table, promising a varied reading experience.

The price point is also noteworthy. At $4.99 for a 32-page issue, the series lands at a standard comic book price.
