Bethesda is taking control of the Fallout franchise, and it is doing so by folding Obsidian Entertainment into its operations. The move comes as Xbox continues its “reset,” a wave of cuts that has reshaped the company’s first-party lineup.
Earlier this year, Xbox laid off 1,600 workers and five first-party developers left the fold. This week’s round of cuts hit 268 roles across the division. That leaves Halo, Rare (Sea of Thieves), and World’s Edge (Age of Empires) under Activision’s control. Obsidian, meanwhile, is being folded into Bethesda.
All three studios previously sat under the Xbox Game Studios banner.
Fallout Project at the Center
Obsidian is currently working on a new Fallout game with Bethesda Game Studios. Bethesda president Jill Braff addressed staff in an email, promising that Obsidian’s “creative identity and strengths” will remain intact.
“The creative identity and strengths that make Obsidian distinct will remain at the core of their studio and work,” Braff wrote. “Feargus Urquhart and the Obsidian leadership team will continue to lead Obsidian, with the studio reporting to me. Bethesda Game Studios will continue to lead the Fallout franchise.”
Braff added that the arrangement builds on the work already underway. “Together, the teams will build on their longstanding relationship and the early work already underway on a new Fallout project, with more to share in the months ahead. This structure supports the franchise-led model we’ve been strengthening while keeping accountability for both the studio and the franchise clear.”
The promise is that Obsidian keeps its creative identity while Bethesda holds the franchise.
The Reset So Far
The first round of Xbox layoffs this summer saw Obsidian lose around 25% of its workforce. Several in-development projects were cancelled as part of the cuts.
Former Xbox leadership took an oddly hands-free approach to many of its in-house developers. New CEO Asha Sharma has been more forthcoming about focusing on The Elder Scrolls, Halo, and Fallout.
Sharma’s stated priorities suggest a narrower portfolio for Xbox’s remaining studios.
The Track Record Behind the Promise
Many of Obsidian’s original games this generation have underperformed. Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 are among those titles that did not meet expectations.
The underperformance complicates the promise that Obsidian’s identity will remain intact. If Bethesda runs the franchise and Obsidian’s recent slate has struggled, the question becomes whether Bethesda will change how Obsidian operates to fix that record.
What Comes Next
Braff’s email points to more to come. “With more to share in the months ahead” suggests Bethesda plans additional announcements about the Fallout project and the arrangement.
The structure supports the franchise-led model Bethesda has been building. Accountability for both the studio and the franchise stays clear.
Here is how the situation breaks down:
- Xbox’s “reset” began earlier this year with 1,600 worker layoffs and five first-party developers leaving.
- This week’s continuation cut 268 roles across the division.
- Halo, Rare (Sea of Thieves), and World’s Edge (Age of Empires) are now under Activision’s control.
- Obsidian is being folded into Bethesda.
- All three studios previously fell under Xbox Game Studios banner.
- In Xbox’s first round of mass layoffs this summer, Obsidian reportedly lost around 25% of its workforce.
- Several in-development projects were cancelled.
- Obsidian is currently developing a new Fallout game with Bethesda Game Studios.
- Braff promised in her email that Obsidian’s “creative identity and strengths” will remain intact.
- She said in an email to staff: “The creative identity and strengths that make Obsidian distinct will remain at the core of their studio and work.”
The promise is that Obsidian keeps its creative identity while Bethesda holds the franchise.
Delivering on the Promise
The key question is whether Bethesda can deliver on its promise. The arrangement supports the franchise-led model Bethesda has been building. Accountability for both the studio and the franchise stays clear.
Bethesda has made the promise. The proof will come in how the arrangement works in practice, not just in words on a screen.
