The Detroit Pistons have reached an agreement with Jalen Duren on a five-year contract worth $200 million, according to ESPN.

Thursday evening brought the announcement, coming hours before the deadline expired. Duren, 22, faced a choice: he could accept a $9.6 million qualifying offer by 11:59 p.m. ET, or he could sign a long-term deal with the franchise. He opted for the long-term arrangement instead.

Deadline Stands

A five-year, $287 million max-salary contract was on the table for Duren. Instead, the Pistons offered considerably less, and that difference made the talks difficult. Since the end of the season, both sides had remained engaged in negotiations.

A few days after the team started training camp, the deal was completed. Duren had already met with other teams during free agency, among them the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings. Only very few teams had enough cap room to make him an offer sheet he could accept, and Detroit would have matched it anyway.

What Accepting the Qualifying Offer Would Have Cost Him

CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn says the method carried no financial benefit.

  1. A four-year max deal from anyone besides the Pistons would pay Duren $189.2 million based on current cap projections.
  2. Including his $9.6 million qualifying offer, Duren could have made up to $198.8 million over the next five seasons — less than the Pistons are reportedly offering.
  3. The offer is on the table now, whereas playing out the season forces him to risk hurting his value through injury or poor performance.

The numbers added up to Quinn’s point: “There’s a lot of risk and nothing to gain financially.”

The Weight Clause Dispute

According to The Athletic, Duren reportedly felt disrespected throughout the whole process, including with the team’s apparent inclusion of a weight clause in a recent contract offer. That clause would have required him to check his weight monthly with the team, and it was removed from the deal earlier this week.

The absence stands out. A weight clause is an uncommon feature in NBA contracts.

Other Teams Involved

Los Angeles had the resources to pursue Duren. Instead, they opted for a sign-and-trade move involving Walker Kessler, who was previously with the Utah Jazz. Sacramento was said to have shown interest in a similar arrangement with Detroit, though the Pistons declined to take part in those discussions.

The result that came up most often was a gathering that fell short of the largest possible size.

Final Day Timing

Restricted free agents often wait until the very end to sign, and this year marks the second straight season where several important restricted free agents signed late in the offseason.

Cam Thomas signed his qualifying offer on Sept. 4, while Jonathan Kuminga (two-year deal) and Quentin Grimes (qualifying offer) waited until the week of the qualifying offer deadline to sign.

The two other restricted free agents this year were Peyton Watson and Kessler. Both ended up signing with new teams through deals that involved trading before the agreement was finalized. Kessler’s move to Los Angeles came at the very start of the moratorium, while Watson signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers last month.

Young Core Locked Up

The latest player from the 2022 class has signed a lucrative multi-year extension, with Duren joining Chet Holmgren, Paolo Banchero, and Jalen Williams, all of whom received the 25% max (five years, $239 million).

Player Contract
Jalen Duren Five-year, $200 million
Chet Holmgren Five years, $239 million
Paolo Banchero Five years, $239 million
Jalen Williams Five years, $239 million
Ausar Thompson Five years, $155 million

The Risk Duren Avoided

Duren had the option to become an unrestricted free agent in 2027, should he take the qualifying offer, which would let him test the market without restriction.

That risk is removed by the deal worth $200 million. Duren remains with the franchise that chose him at No. 13 overall in the 2022 NBA Draft.

The Bottom Line

There was a great deal of dispute during the talks. The weight clause was particularly troubling for all involved. The numbers were so close that Duren could have decided to walk away entirely.

He did not. He took the money.

The Pistons have settled the standoff, securing a key part of their young core with a deal that keeps them solid at center for the next five years. Duren’s choice brings peace to the situation, locking up that position for the franchise’s future. The agreement is final. The story moves on from here.
