Bumblebee is the Transformers movie that finally slows down. Travis Knight directs Christina Hodson’s script, a 114-minute action adventure that trades city-leveling spectacle for a battered yellow Volkswagen and a teenager who needs it.

A Junkyard in 1987

The setup is clean. On Cybertron, the Autobots are losing. Optimus Prime sends scout B-127 to Earth to build a base, and B-127 crash-lands in California in 1987, disrupting a Sector 7 training exercise. Colonel Jack Burns assumes the robot is hostile and attacks. The Decepticon Blitzwing then tears out B-127’s voice box and damages his memory core before B-127 kills him with his own missile.

B-127 scans a 1967 yellow Volkswagen Beetle and collapses. Charlie Watson, grieving her father and resentful of her mother Sally’s boyfriend Ron, finds the car in her Uncle Hank’s scrapyard. He gives it to her for her 18th birthday. When she tries to start it, she trips a homing signal, and the Decepticons Shatter and Dropkick pick it up. They come to Earth, pose as peacekeepers, and talk Sector 7 into helping hunt B-127.

Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena

Steinfeld plays Charlie, and the film leans on her. Cena is Burns, the soldier who spends most of the film wrong. Jorge Lendeborg Jr. plays Memo Gutierrez, and Angela Bassett voices Shatter.

Element Bumblebee (2018) Typical Transformers entry
Scale Small town, one Autobot Global, ensemble
Human lead Charlie Watson, 18 Varied
Setting 1987 Modern day
Runtime 114 minutes Longer

The 1987 setting is the film’s best decision.

What Works and What Doesn’t

  1. Steinfeld’s Charlie — the emotional center holds.
  2. Knight’s direction — the action stays readable.
  3. The 1987 setting — period detail does real work.
  4. The Decepticon plot — Shatter and Dropkick are thin.

The film grossed $468 million against a budget between $102–135 million. It was followed by Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in June 2023.

Where It Lands

Bumblebee is a course correction, not a reinvention. The voice-box loss gives the robot a genuine limitation, and Steinfeld carries scenes a lesser movie would hand to explosions. But the Decepticon scheme is forgettable, and the Sector 7 material drags. It earns its warmth without earning much tension.
