CBS has a hit it has spent two years refusing to talk about like one. Elsbeth premiered on February 29, 2024, and has run 51 episodes across four seasons on the network. It is not done. CBS renewed the series for a fourth season in January 2026, and that season is slated to premiere on October 8, 2026.
That is a long life for a spin-off of a spin-off, and the show earned it by doing something the rest of the network procedural slate does not: it tells you the killer in the first ten minutes and dares you to stay for the catch.

Carrie Preston and the Columbo Inheritance
The premise is simple and the show never apologizes for it. Elsbeth Tascioni, played by Carrie Preston, was an unconventional attorney on The Good Wife and The Good Fight. Here she works alongside the New York Police Department. She arrives in New York under an official assignment tied to a monitorship or consent decree, and her real mission, revealed across season one, is to investigate Captain C. W. Wagner for corruption. Wendell Pierce plays Wagner. Carra Patterson joined as Kaya Blanke.
The format is the engine. Most episodes use the “howcatchem” mystery, showing the audience the killer, the method and the motive up front. The balance of the hour is the trap. This is the inverted detective story, the same structure the 1970s Columbo murder mysteries used. The pleasure is not in the puzzle. It is in watching a woman everyone underestimates walk a guilty person into a corner using nothing but manners and a stray observation.
Preston is the whole bet. She played this character across two prior series, and the risk of a third outing was that the quirk would curdle into shtick. It does not. Her Elsbeth is astute, offbeat and genuinely strange, and the show trusts her to carry scenes that would collapse under a lesser performer.
The Good Wife Universe, Loosened
The Kings made a deliberate choice about continuity, and it is the smartest structural decision in the series. On The Good Wife and The Good Fight, they avoided recycling actors for different characters. On Elsbeth, they dropped that rule. Guest stars from the earlier shows, Linda Lavin among them, appear as different characters entirely.
That sounds like a gimmick. It is actually a release valve. It lets the show borrow the goodwill of a shared universe without being chained to its history, and it means a familiar face can walk in without the audience spending the hour doing continuity math.
| Element | Elsbeth | Columbo |
|---|---|---|
| Mystery format | Howcatchem | Howcatchem |
| Audience knows killer | From the start | From the start |
| Focus | The catch | The catch |
| Lead investigator | Elsbeth Tascioni | — |
The comparison is not a knock. The inverted detective story is a durable machine, and the Kings run it cleanly. But the table also shows the ceiling. Elsbeth leans on Preston and a guest roster that, by the show’s own design, can pull from two decades of Good-universe alumni. That is a narrower bench than the one the format was built on.
Where the Show Slipped
Patterson’s exit as a series regular is the clearest sign of trouble.
On May 1, 2025, it was reported she would leave the regular cast but return as a guest star for season three. Kaya Blanke was Elsbeth’s grounding wire, the person who made the police work feel like a workplace rather than a stage.
The renewal pattern is steady. CBS picked up season two in April 2024, season three in February 2025, and season four in January 2026. Season two premiered October 17, 2024. Season three premiered October 12, 2025. Season four is slated for October 8, 2026.
What 7.5 Out of 10 Means Here
Elsbeth is a well-built procedural with a genuinely distinctive lead and a format it executes without fuss. IMDb users put it at 7.5 out of 10. The Wagner corruption thread gave season one a spine, and the loss of Patterson as a regular removes one of the few relationships that kept Elsbeth tethered to anything like a normal life.
The guest-star recycling is fun and it is also a tell. A show confident in its own world does not need to keep reminding you it came from somewhere else.
What works, works hard. Preston is worth the hour on her own, and the howcatchem structure gives every episode a clean shape that most network dramas never find. What does not work is the ambition. This paper’s read is that Elsbeth is content to be a good version of a thing that already existed, and with a fourth season already ordered, it has room to try being something that did not.
