Fox News is marking three decades on air, and the network’s chief digital officer is telling the story of how a scrappy newcomer grew into a major force in television news.

Jason Klarman, chief digital officer for Fox News Media, joined the channel’s launch marketing team in the early Clinton era. Today, he reflects on the milestone anniversary and the era of media in which Fox News Channel was born.

“There is a consistency to Fox that hasn’t changed from 1996 to 30 years later,” Klarman says. “A lot of channels that chased audiences and moved away from what was core to their brand and their ethos — Fox has never done that.”

From 10 Million Subscribers to a Cultural Force

When Fox News debuted on Oct. 7, 1996, it launched on just 10 million subscribers on John Malone’s Tele-Communications Inc. systems. The channel was a slow burn from the start.

“We used to joke that we were fourth in a three-horse race,” Klarman recalls. “We were scrappy. And we did a lot of fun things to bring attention to ourselves.”

One stunt stood out. In Atlanta, Klarman took two billboards opposite CNN and hired a high school marching band.

“We unveiled the billboards when we launched on Cox [cable system] in Atlanta,” he says.

The network’s early days were marked by incremental gains rather than overnight success. Klarman points to specific moments that helped define the Fox News audience.

“There were points along the way that we just started to see, incrementally, the distinction between us and the other news organizations. It really began to crystallize,” he says.

“One of those moments was certainly around Monica Lewinsky and the coverage of that. And then the election of 2000 — that was a big one. I think it was an accelerant for us. It was a very hard-fought race right down to the wire,” Klarman says. “And ultimately, it really galvanized the need for a channel called Fox News.”

The Brand That Never Moved From Its Core

The network’s longevity rests on staying true to its roots. Klarman argues that Fox has avoided the trap of chasing audiences at the expense of its identity.

“A lot of channels that chased audiences and moved away from what was core to their brand and their ethos — Fox has never done that,” he says.

That consistency is the channel’s defining strength. The comparison to a Phoenix is apt. The channel rose from a modest cable presence to become a TV powerhouse and cultural influencer.

Reaching Younger Viewers Through Streaming

The past decade has brought new challenges. Younger audiences have fragmented across social media, streaming services and niche content platforms.

To keep growing, Fox News has pushed into younger territory. The network has expanded through Fox Nation, its streaming platform, and a large new slate of podcasts.

Klarman describes these efforts as part of a broader push to stay relevant. The goal is to create a funnel for future viewers, drawing younger listeners and readers into the larger Fox News ecosystem.

The embrace of TikTok and other social media platforms is part of that strategy. Fox News is trying to meet audiences where they already spend their time.

Polarization and Fragmentation

Fox News has become a polarizing brand in the U.S., and Klarman acknowledges the tension. The network operates in an era of heightened partisan tensions in the body politic and ever-increasing fragmentation in TV viewing.

Klarman frames the network’s success as a matter of staying true to its mission. The channel’s core ethos has remained intact for three decades.

The High School Marching Band Stunt

The journey from billboard-unveiling stunts in Atlanta to the current era of streaming and podcasts is remarkable. Klarman’s account offers a rare, insider look at how Fox News built its brand.

The network’s evolution from a small cable channel to a cultural influencer shows the power of persistence.

The high school marching band in Atlanta seems quaint now.
