A young guide of spirits stands amid a decaying forest, her staff bright with light, while small dark creatures gather about her feet.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits first arrived on PS4, PS5 and PC in 2021 as a tight, handsome action-adventure built around a young spirit guide and a forest full of lost souls. Revisited now, it earns an 8.2 out of 10.

The Rot and the Forest

The game follows Kena as she moves through a decaying forest, clearing corruption known as Rot from its shrines and paths. Small black creatures, also called the Rot, follow her and help in combat and puzzle-solving. The world design rewards exploration. Side paths hide upgrades, and clearing them off the main route never feels like work.

Combat on PS5 and PC

Combat centers on a staff that switches between close strikes and a bow. Enemy encounters scale up steadily, and boss fights ask players to read patterns rather than press keys at random. On PS5, load times are short and the controller adds light feedback to combat. On PC, performance holds steady on modern hardware.

Bosses stand out as the game’s best-built sequences.

Character Work

The story leans on Kena’s relationships with spirits she frees from the Rot’s grip, each tied to a specific memory or regret. These moments carry real weight, especially in the game’s back half, when the plot ties the forest’s decay to a specific loss. Voice acting throughout is quiet rather than showy, which suits the softer tone the game reaches for.

Visual Design and Pace

The visual style borrows from animated film more than typical console games, with soft lighting and expressive character models. Rot creatures, in particular, are designed with a mix of humor and discomfort that keeps them memorable outside combat too. The art direction is consistent from the opening village to the final chapter, without the drop-off in polish that sometimes hits smaller studio releases.

A single run lands around 12 to 15 hours, depending on how much side content players clear.

Chapter Focus Time
1 Village and forest entry 1–2 hrs
2 First shrine, Rot companions unlocked 2–3 hrs
3 Mountain path, bow upgrades 3–4 hrs
4 Central corruption zone 3–4 hrs
5 Final confrontation 2–3 hrs

Kena: Bridge of Spirits was a confident debut in 2021. It didn’t change the action-adventure formula, but it executed nearly every piece of it well, from combat to world design to its core. Across PS4, PS5 and PC, it stood as one of the more complete smaller releases of that year.
