Madden NFL 26 is the first Madden game in more than a decade to land on a Nintendo console, and the first built only for the current generation of home hardware. EA Orlando’s football sim arrived August 14, 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. It is the 36th entry in the series and the first since Madden NFL 13 to appear on a Nintendo platform.

Saquon Barkley and the Reverse Hurdle
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is the cover athlete, announced June 2, 2025. The art draws on his “reverse hurdle” over Jarrian Jones in the 2024 season — the play that made Barkley a highlight staple. He is the second Eagles player to front a Madden cover, after Donovan McNabb on Madden NFL 06.
The choice lands. Barkley’s hurdle was one of the few genuinely strange, athletic moments of the 2024 season, and a cover built on it says more about the game’s ambitions than a generic action shot would.
Four Modes, One New Position
Madden NFL 26 ships with the modes the series is known for:
- Ultimate Team, where players build a roster from NFL legends and current players and compete online
- Franchise, where players coach a team through drafting, play calling and depth chart decisions
- Superstar, a career mode that starts at the NFL Combine and runs on weekly goals and challenges
- Split screen and co-operative play, alongside single player and multiplayer
Superstar is the most interesting of the three. Starting at the Combine and controlling one player rather than the whole team changes the rhythm of a season — goals and challenges replace the broader management loop, and the mode asks the player to care about a single career instead of a roster.
The detail that will matter to a certain kind of player: this is the first Madden to recognize long snapper as a distinct position. It is a small thing. It is also the kind of small thing that separates a simulation from a highlight reel.
A Solid Year, Not a Reinvention
The ninth-generation exclusivity is the real story here. Building only for current hardware means EA Orlando did not have to split the difference with older machines, and the Switch 2 launch gives Nintendo owners a Madden for the first time in years. That is a bigger deal than any single mode.
Madden NFL 26 does not reinvent the series. It refines it, adds one genuinely new position, and puts a memorable play on the cover. The mode list is familiar, the structure is familiar, and the game is better for not chasing a gimmick.
For a franchise that has spent years fighting the charge that it ships the same game annually, a clean generational break and a Nintendo return are the most convincing counterargument available. The long snapper line is a joke until you realize it is proof someone is still paying attention to the sport underneath the branding.
