Payday 3 Review: The Heist Formula Holds, But the Campaign Drags

A gang of thieves returns to crime for vengeance against a conspiracy threatening their safety and fortune.

A masked figure breaks into a vault while his companions watch from the shadows.

Payday 3 brings the heist formula back to the screen, and for the most part it delivers on the promise of a co-op shooter with real stakes. The game follows the Payday Gang after years away from crime, pulled back into action by a conspiracy that threatens their safety and their fortune. The premise is strong, and the cast — including returning favorites Dallas, Chains, Wolf and Hoxton, plus newcomers like Pearl — gives players plenty of reasons to keep playing.

The Heist Formula Holds

The core loop remains intact. Players plan each job, pick their gear, and execute it together. The game adds new wrinkles — more advanced surveillance, the rise of cryptocurrency — that give the setting some weight. Jobs range from banks to armored transports to jewelry stores, and each one asks for a different approach.

Where It Falls Short

Not everything lands. The campaign leans heavily on its cast, but the pacing drags in places, and some missions feel thin next to the best entries in the series. The game also struggles with balance across its difficulty settings, meaning a run that feels easy for one player can feel nearly impossible for another.

Game Setting Main Focus
Payday 3 New York and surrounds, 2020s Co-op heists, crime net
Payday 2 Washington DC Co-op heists, bank jobs

Payday 3 is a solid entry in a series known for rewarding teamwork and planning. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to. The heist formula still works, and the new additions mostly enhance rather than break it. The campaign drags in spots and the difficulty can swing wildly, but the co-op foundation remains strong.
