Sienna Spiro on Writing “Great Expectation”: The Electric Lady Sessions Behind Her New Single

A tale of Sienna Spiro's Great Expectation, wrought in song and studio, wherein a maiden of twenty years proves herself a songstress of singular force.

Sienna Spiro walked into Electric Lady Studios with a finished song, and she brought it to Omer Fedi before she even got there. That’s the story behind “Great Expectation,” the single that’s turning out to be one of the biggest songs of the year.

Spiro, the 20-year-old English singer-songwriter who just released her debut album Visitor, says she arrived at the New York studio with the idea, the hook and the chords fully formed. “She said, ‘Oh, I had this idea. What do you think?'” Fedi remembers, still in awe. “[She] did it all alone, sounding amazing.”

The London native was just a teenager when a TikTok of her singing Finneas’ “Break My Heart Again” drew attention from managers and labels. She partnered with Miriam Maslin at Method Music for management and signed with Capitol Records. Now she’s one of Gen Z’s most gifted performers, and she’s proving she can make hits too.

How “Great Expectation” Got Made

Fedi arrived at Electric Lady Studios for one of Spiro’s final sessions for Visitor. He found her at the piano, ready to go. “I’m usually pretty early — I’ve never gotten there before her,” he told Billboard with a laugh. “She’s always there on the piano, like, ‘OK, I have a song.’ The best stuff that we’ve made together is stuff that she basically comes to the studio with the song 99% done.”

Spiro’s account of writing the song fully formed, from chord to hook, before bringing it to Fedi shows genuine creative force rather than manufactured star power. She didn’t need a room full of writers to land a hit — she showed up with one.

The Numbers Behind the Hit

By early 2026, Spiro had made her first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 with her breakout single, “Die on This Hill,” which peaked at No. 19. “Great Expectation” followed, debuting in July, and it has been climbing the Hot 100 ever since. It recently made Spiro the youngest British female artist to score a U.K. No. 1 in 12 years.

The song also put her on the map in the U.S. The climb continues, and the record suggests she’s only getting started.

The Fashion Behind the Story

The photos from the shoot show Spiro dressed in vintage style, with a Louis Vuitton dress and vintage earrings in one look, and a vintage Saint Laurent dress paired with Hervé Guyel shoes in another. A Charles and Patricia Lester coat rounds out the collection. Styling was by Edie Rose, hair by Jack Luckhurst at The Only Agency, and makeup by Brooke Turnbull at The Wall Group. On-Site Production was by Lindsay Jill Roth.

Spiro’s success is built on control. She writes all her own songs, and she knows exactly what she wants to sing. The public knows her more as an incredible vocalist, but the story of “Great Expectation” shows a side of her that’s rarely seen — the songwriter who walks into a studio with the whole song already done.
