Six Switch 2 games arrive in October 2026, from a cult indie puzzler to a blockbuster military shooter returning to Nintendo.

Nintendo’s Switch 2 owners have a full slate of releases for October 2026, and Polygon has named six games it says you officially cannot miss. The month starts with an indie puzzle game from a designer with a reputation for trouble and ends with a military shooter that finally returns to Nintendo after years away. Here is what you need to know.

The Puzzle Game With a Designer Problem

October’s biggest game is not a big-budget blockbuster. It is Order of the Sinking Star, an indie puzzle game developed by Jonathan Blow, the man behind Braid and The Witness. Blow has a reputation for being difficult to work with, and there are questions about who gets credit for the game, which is based on several other sokoban-style block-pushing puzzles. Those issues are real, but Blow’s skill as a designer is not in question.

The game is described as a nearly bottomless well of clever head-scratchers. It launches Oct. 8.

Capcom’s Long-Running Campaign

Capcom has become the Switch 2’s biggest partner, porting nearly everything it owns to the Nintendo console. October brings two entries from the publisher’s back catalogue. The first is Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, which arrives Oct. 9 with the new Dark Arisen update and expansion included from day one.

The second is a trio of Resident Evil titles. Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 all hit Oct. 16. The middle entry is the weakest of the three, though still a decent game. The other two are described as truly amazing new takes on the originals, imagining what those games would look like if made today rather than updating them directly. The package is must-play material ahead of next year’s Veronica, the next entry in the series.

The Return of Motion-Control Sports

Nintendo’s exclusive for the month is Switch Sports Resort, arriving Oct. 22. It is the sequel to the original Switch Sports motion-control sports game, and it follows the footsteps of 2009’s Wii Sports Resort by moving the action to a cheerful vacation island. The roster of activities includes jetski, skateboarding, table tennis, and even thumb wrestling, for some reason.

The game is a comeback for the casual and family crowd. It is a traditional Nintendo exclusive, the kind the company puts out each month, and it lands in the middle of October’s busy schedule.

Square Enix’s New Style

Square Enix brings its own retro RPG to the Switch 2 on Oct. 22. The game is Final Fantasy Resonance, and it is the first Final Fantasy game in the HD-2D style. That is a significant shift for the series, which has mostly stuck to 3D graphics in recent years.

Resonance is not a remake of one of the classic 2D games. It is also not an all-new title. Instead, it is a ground-up adaptation of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, using its first story arc. The twist is that players can recruit and use a wide cast of classic Final Fantasy characters as summons, including Cloud Strife.

The Big AAA Multiplatform Arrival

The biggest surprise of October is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which launches Oct. 23 with campaign early access starting Oct. 16. The game arrives on Switch 2 alongside PlayStation, Xbox, and PC versions, marking the first time Call of Duty has returned to Nintendo platforms since the Wii U’s early days.

The move was promised by Microsoft when it acquired Activision, and it was required by regulators as part of approving the acquisition. The source notes that the Switch 2’s power and success likely would have pulled the game to Nintendo anyway, but the legal mandate made it happen.

Everyone is hoping for a return to form after last year’s lackluster Black Ops 7. Infinity Ward, the studio behind Modern Warfare, is expected to deliver.

A Month of Ports

October is also notable for upgrades to existing Switch games. The two Octopath Traveler games and Minecraft are getting Switch 2 versions. Those upgrades sit alongside the ports from Capcom, Square Enix, and Activision, making this one of the busiest months in recent memory.

The month’s schedule is dense, with six major releases spread across three weeks. That pace will test anyone’s backlog.

What to Play First

The question of which game to start with depends on your taste. If you want a solo puzzle challenge, Order of the Sinking Star offers near-infinite levels to solve. If you want a sprawling adventure, the Resident Evil trio delivers the best new takes on the series. If you want a multiplayer weekend, Switch Sports Resort is the cheerful island-bound option. And if you want a classic Final Fantasy character in your party, Final Fantasy Resonance fits that bill.

The Call of Duty arrival is the biggest surprise for longtime fans. The game’s return to Nintendo is a rare moment for the platform, and the early access start means players can dive in before the full campaign lands.

The Bottom Line

Polygon’s picks cover a wide range of genres and styles. The list includes a cult indie designer, a Capcom sweep, a Nintendo revival, a Square Enix experiment, and a blockbuster shooter. That mix is the strength of the month.

The only real risk is trying to play all six. October will test the patience of even the most dedicated gamer.
