A Lord of the Rings movie based on Stephen Colbert’s vision is still alive. The project, announced in March 2026, was reported as “paused” in October, but Warner Bros. has stepped in to correct that. The movie is still in development.

Knight Edge Media reported that the project had been paused due to the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger. Rob Keyes of Screen Rant responded on X on Oct. 5, calling that report inaccurate. Warner Bros. then contacted Knight Edge Media directly to verify the project’s status.

“WB has reached out to reiterate that it is not ‘canceled’ and is still in development.”

Colbert’s Project

Peter Jackson, who directed the Lord of the Rings trilogy, announced the movie in March 2026. He said he was developing it alongside Stephen Colbert and Colbert’s son, screenwriter Peter McGee. Philippa Boyens, a writer on both the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, has also signed on for the project.

Before the two studios merged, New Line and Warner Bros. gave the go-ahead to a film that carries the title The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past. Since then, talk has swirled about which major projects fall under the new company Skydance after Paramount joined with Warner Bros. That particular project appears to have escaped any change.

What the Movie Does

The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past aims to expand the original trilogy. It adapts early chapters from the first book that were cut from Jackson’s films, specifically the hobbits’ journey from Hobbiton to Bree.

Before they reached the Barrow-downs, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin faced trouble from the start. Pursued by the Black Riders and compelled to cross strange country, they were caught in the Barrow-downs, where they nearly met death at the hands of the evil spirits buried within.

This film continues the story after the trilogy’s close, following Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they revisit the places where their early adventures took place. The summary, as per Variety, is:

“Fourteen years after the passing of Frodo – Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.”

Colbert’s Tolkien Roots

A Lord of the Rings project has Colbert attached to it, and given how much he loves Tolkien’s work, the connection makes perfect sense. Colbert has made his love for Tolkien’s Middle-earth known over the years, from his time as a guest host on The Late Show to his frequent references to the books during his tenure there. The series Shadows of the Past remains under development, with no additional details on its progress currently provided.

The Rumors

Knight Edge Media’s report claimed the project was paused. Keyes called it inaccurate, noting that “Status is exactly as it was weeks ago. They’re still writing, no confirmed budget or shoot date, etc.” He went on to confirm that the project was still moving forward.

The update at the bottom of the story, added by Knight Edge Media, confirmed that the project remains in development and has not been canceled. That update came after Warner Bros. reached out to Knight Edge Media directly to verify the project’s status.

The Next Movie

Andy Serkis directs The Hunt for Gollum, the upcoming Lord of the Rings film, which arrives in theaters on Dec. 17, 2027.

The Hunt for Gollum follows Aragorn’s quest through the wild lands to find signs of the elusive Smeagol prior to the Council of Elrond. Gandalf gave him the task to uncover the history of the strange ring first possessed by Bilbo and later by Frodo.

What We Know Now

Warner Bros. has confirmed that the Colbert project remains in development. It is still being written, and neither a budget nor a shoot date has been confirmed yet.

The project is set up to be a truly interesting project for fans of Tolkien’s Middle-earth. It expands the original trilogy by telling stories from the first book that were cut from Jackson’s films.

A strong creative team sets this project apart. The trio of Colbert, McGee, and Boyens combine comedy, screenwriting, and deep knowledge of Tolkien’s world on this venture. Jackson himself announced the movie in March 2026, and the project has been a talking point ever since.

The Bottom Line

The rumor was wrong. The project is still alive.

Shadows of the Past remains under construction. The path to it is still accessible.
