A 2019 Movie Tie-In Game That Never Escapes Its Own Source Material

The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame is a 2019 action-adventure game built on a film that already told this story. It lands on PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch with a 6.2 of 10.

Emmet and the Ruins of Bricksburg

The premise comes straight from the movie. Alien monster invaders have left Bricksburg in ruins, and Emmet leads a host of heroic characters beyond their own world to save their friends from the strange inhabitants of the Systar System. Players journey into outer space, discover new worlds, and test their Master Building skills.

Traveller’s Tales developed the game. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment published it. It released February 26, 2019, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows and Xbox One, with MacOS following on March 14, 2019.

Lego Worlds and Refined Combat

The game borrows elements from Lego Worlds. It adds new characters and refined combat mechanics, alongside those carried over from the first game. Worlds and characters from both films are featured.

Players create various structures in order to access new levels. That loop is the spine of the whole thing, and it is where the Lego Worlds borrowing shows most plainly.

The Prophecy Pack and Galactic Adventures

Two expansions followed the launch:

  • The “Prophecy Pack,” which brought prominent characters from the first movie into the game, including Young Vitruvius and Lord Business
  • “Galactic Adventures,” made available April 18, 2019, featuring three levels that expand on certain plot moments from the film

Galactic Adventures covers Future Emmet’s rise to becoming Rex Dangervest, and Mayhem helping the members of the Justice League along with helping the Queen with the ceremony.

A Stand-Alone Sequel With a Borrowed Spine

The Prophecy Pack is the better of the two. Pulling Young Vitruvius and Lord Business forward ties the sequel back to the first film, and it gives the older cast something to do beyond a cameo.

Galactic Adventures is thinner. Three levels built around moments the film already covered is an odd use of an expansion. It reads as material trimmed from the main game rather than a new direction.

The Last Warner Bros. Lego Movie Game

The Lego Movie 2 Videogame is the last Lego Movie videogame published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment before the Warner Bros. contract with The Lego Group expired in favor of a new one with Universal Pictures in 2020.

That timing is the footnote. The real problem is the game’s own: it is a retelling, and the film told it first and better. The Lego Worlds borrowing gives building more room than the first game allowed, and the combat is cleaner for it. But the campaign leans on the movie’s beats without adding much of its own, and the two expansions split the difference between fan service and filler.
