A giant sinkhole erupts into a volcanic eruption in a city street at night.

“9-1-1” Season 10 is coming, and the show wants you to know it starts with a hole in the street. Showrunner Tim Minear tells TVLine that the season opener opens with a giant sinkhole, which then transforms into a volcano, turning Los Angeles into “La-Va Land.”

Minear describes the season as a mix of disaster, drama and domestic change. “Volcanoes, sinkholes, fatherhood, love, death, humor, laughter, and lots and lots of food,” he says. The trailer, released by ABC, shows the show’s signature chaos, but the showrunner’s joke about a real-life sinkhole on Sunset Boulevard adds a layer of meta amusement.

The Season 10 Setup

The tenth season picks up where Season 9 left off, with major changes across the main cast. Athena Grant, played by Angela Bassett, has moved from sergeant to detective. Buck Buckley, played by Oliver Stark, is raising Theo after Theo’s parents died in a car crash. Buck has signed paperwork to become Theo’s legal guardian, making fatherhood a central plot thread for the first time.

May Grant, played by Corinne Massiah, has started a new career in the medical field. Harry Grant, played by Elijah M. Cooper, is entering his second season as a firefighter. Eddie Diaz, played by Ryan Guzman, remains in the picture, though his own troubles continue.

The season also brings back “9-1-1: Nashville” for its Season 2 premiere and “Grey’s Anatomy” for its Season 23 premiere, giving viewers a triple-header of ABC procedurals.

How Season 9 Ended

The final episodes of Season 9 threw a stream of curveballs at the 118. Athena had a near-death experience involving a human-trafficking ring and a crooked detective, which pushed her to become a detective. Her kids, Harry and May, are both finding their place in the world.

Hen, played by Aisha Hinds, fought a mysterious illness throughout Season 9. It turned out to be dermatomyositis, an auto-immune disorder likely caused by the radiation she encountered in outer space. Her secrecy and recklessness temporarily cost her her job, but she was eventually reinstated.

Buck’s storyline was particularly chaotic. He donated sperm to his friend Connor and Connor’s wife Kameron back in Season 6. After reconnecting with the couple after three years, Buck discovered that little Theo is basically his mini-me. Then Connor and Kameron were killed in a car crash, leaving Buck as Theo’s legal guardian.

That was not even the worst of Buck’s season. After a kidnapping incident in New Mexico, he developed an addiction to prescription painkillers, putting his future with the 118 at risk.

Other Season 9 updates included Maddie taking over Sue’s position as dispatch supervisor, Chimney settling into his role as captain of the 118, and Ravi and May beginning a new relationship. Harry really wishes he hadn’t found out the way he did. Eddie dealt with serious loss, losing Abuela, only to be stabbed in the finale by the same crime family that targeted Athena.

The Cast Lineup

The show’s core ensemble remains intact for Season 10:

  • Angela Bassett as Detective Athena Grant
  • Oliver Stark as firefighter Evan “Buck” Buckley
  • Aisha Hinds as firefighter/paramedic Henrietta “Hen” Wilson
  • Kenneth Choi as Captain Howard “Chimney” Han
  • Jennifer Love Hewitt as dispatcher Maddie Han
  • Ryan Guzman as firefighter/paramedic Edmundo “Eddie” Diaz
  • Corinne Massiah as nurse May Grant
  • Elijah M. Cooper as firefighter Harry Grant
  • Gavin McHugh as Eddie’s son Christopher Diaz

The Milestone Season

Minear says the season is not a reset, but it does offer fresh ground to cover. “I don’t know if it’s business as usual, but we were kind of laying the groundwork last season to have some fresh ground to cover this season,” he says.

He points to the gradual changes the show made over the past few seasons. “We didn’t do it all at once, but we gradually started planting those seeds. It’s the same show, but hopefully not a hamster wheel of a show.”

The key changes are visible in the cast’s new roles. Athena is a detective, Buck is a father, May is in medicine, Harry is a firefighter, and Eddie’s storyline continues to involve his own trauma and loss.

The Premiere Date

Season 10 kicks off on Thursday, October 15 at 8/7c. The episode airs on ABC, followed by the Season 2 premiere of “9-1-1: Nashville” and the Season 23 premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy.”

The premiere promises a return to the show that started it all.

A Delightfully Absurd Premise

The volcano idea is a delightfully absurd premise for a television show. It is the kind of disaster that the show has built its reputation on, and the trailer suggests the writers are leaning into the chaos.

Minear’s joke about the real-life sinkhole adds a layer of self-awareness that the show has cultivated over its run. The showrunner’s willingness to acknowledge the ridiculousness of the situation is part of what makes “9-1-1” work.

The trailer is a tease, and the premiere date is set. Fans will have to wait until October 15 to see how the volcano plays out. The show has survived nine seasons of disaster, and it looks ready to keep surviving.

Fans have plenty to look forward to. The premiere will answer some questions and raise new ones. The volcano is the spectacle, but the drama is the draw.

“9-1-1” has been on the air for nine seasons, and it shows no signs of slowing down. The tenth season promises more of the same, with the added bonus of a giant sinkhole that turns into a volcano. That is the kind of premise that only “9-1-1” could pull off.

The show has established a pattern of ending seasons with cliffhangers and starting new ones with fresh stakes. Season 10 is no exception. The volcano is a visual hook, but the real story is the characters.

For fans of “9-1-1,” the premiere is coming soon. The volcano is coming soon. The show is coming soon.
