Tyler Perry has spent two decades building one of the most reliable franchises in American film. “Why Did I Get Married Again?” is his fourth trip to that well, and the first since 2010. Perry writes and directs, and he steps in front of the camera as Terry.
The setup is a destination wedding. Marcus and Angela’s daughter is getting married, and the old couples fly out to watch. Perry gives himself 112 minutes to drag eight adults through old wounds and new ones.

Tyler Perry Puts Terry Back in the Room
The tagline asks, “Ring any bells?” It should. The cast is the reason to show up. Taraji P. Henson returns as Roselyn. Jill Scott is Sheila again. Richard T. Jones plays Mike, Tasha Smith is Angela, and Michael Jai White is Marcus. Sharon Leal and Lamman Rucker round out the group as Dianne and Troy.
That is a deep bench of performers who know these roles cold.
The Next Generation Takes the Aisle
Perry hands the actual wedding to the younger cast. Armani Greer plays Jasmine, Everett Osborne is Wesley, Da’Vinchi is Marcus Jr., and Laya DeLeon Hayes is Kenya. The title question belongs to their parents now, not to them.
The genre mix is the same as always:
- Comedy
- Romance
- Drama
Three lanes, one movie, and Perry has never been shy about cutting between them mid-scene.
What the Title Is Really Asking
The synopsis says the couples reunite and ask, “Why did we get married again?” That is the whole engine. A wedding forces people who chose each other once to explain why they would do it twice, or admit they would not.
Perry has run this exact experiment three times before. The first film worked because the question felt live. By the third, the answer had gotten comfortable. A fourth pass needs something the earlier ones did not have, and the source material does not show it. The new spouses are the only fresh variable, and they are the ones saying vows, not the ones doubting them.
A Destination With No Stakes
A wedding abroad should raise the temperature. Here it mostly provides a backdrop. The couples arrive, the old grievances surface, and the ceremony proceeds. Nothing in the synopsis suggests a single decision that cannot be undone by the closing credits.
That is the franchise’s real problem, and it is not a casting problem.
Where This One Lands
The honest read: this is a reunion, not a reinvention. Perry knows his audience and serves it without apology. Henson, Scott and Smith can carry a scene on presence alone, and 112 minutes is a reasonable ask for a cast this good.
But a title that poses a question should answer it. “Why Did I Get Married Again?” mostly restates the question in a nicer location. Fans of the series will take that trade. Anyone arriving fresh will wonder what the fuss was about.
