The Pathless Review: Finding Light in a Fog-Covered Island

A vast island shrouded in mist, a bow, a companion beast, and a quest to find the light within the gloom.

An archer stands upon a misty promontory, bow raised, beside his faithful companion beast amid the shadowed wood.

The Pathless arrives on Series X|S, PS4 and PC as a game about finding light in a dark world, and it mostly delivers on that promise. Developer Giant Enemy Crab and publisher Annapurna Interactive have built a puzzle-driven adventure that leans hard on atmosphere, and the result is a game that feels less like a straight-up action title and more like a guided meditation on loss and connection.

The Forest and Its Sound

The game drops players on a vast island covered in fog, and the first hour is spent learning how to see through it. The main tool is a bow, and the secondary tool is a companion animal that can sniff out hidden paths. Together, they form the core loop: find a glowing marker, clear the fog, and move forward.

The sound design carries a lot of the weight here. Birds call in the distance, wind rushes through the trees, and the occasional distant roar signals danger. These cues are the closest thing the game has to a map, and they work far better than any compass ever could.

The Companion Animal

The companion animal is the heart of The Pathless. It follows closely behind, reacts to threats, and occasionally leads the way. Losing it means losing progress, and that creates a bond players feel invested in protecting.

The AI is smart enough to keep pace without getting in the way, and it rarely gets stuck. That consistency is a relief, since a companion that stops moving can break the rhythm of exploration.

Puzzles and Combat

Combat is simple but effective. Enemies are large, slow-moving targets that require careful aiming and timing. The bow has a satisfying arc, and the game rewards patience over quick bursts of fire.

Puzzles are where The Pathless shows its range. Players might need to light torches, redirect wind currents, or use a companion animal to pull levers. None of them are brutally difficult, but they all ask for observation and planning.

The Fog and Its Limits

The fog is both a blessing and a curse. It hides secrets and enemies, but it also hides the path forward. Some players will find the lack of a traditional map frustrating, especially in later areas where the markers grow sparse.

There is a moment near the middle of the game where the fog lifts entirely, and the effect is stunning. It’s a rare instance where visual clarity feels like a reward rather than a convenience.

Performance Across Platforms

The Pathless runs on Series X|S, PS4 and PC, and each version holds up well. Load times are short, and the frame rate stays steady even during busy boss fights.

On PC, the game supports a wide range of resolutions and aspect ratios, which is a welcome touch for players who want a larger screen. The iOS version exists too, though it is a separate build from the console releases.

What Holds It Back

Not everything lands. The story, told largely through brief animated scenes, is thin on character development. Players learn the stakes early, but they don’t get to know the people involved beyond a few lines of dialogue.

The pacing can also drag in the middle section, where several puzzles repeat similar mechanics without much variation. This is a game best played in short sessions, not marathoned for hours at a time.

“Find the light.”

That line sums up the whole experience. The Pathless is at its best when it lets players breathe, explore, and solve problems at their own pace. It’s a game about presence as much as it is about skill.

Here’s how the pieces stack up:

  1. The companion animal system is the strongest mechanic in the game.
  2. Puzzle variety is solid but occasionally repetitive.
  3. Combat is competent but not demanding.
  4. The story is thin but serviceable.
  5. The fog-based exploration is the game’s defining feature.

Taken together, The Pathless earns its place as a standout release in the adventure genre. It doesn’t try to be everything, and it doesn’t need to. What it offers is a focused, atmospheric journey with a companion that feels like a friend rather than a tool.

The Pathless scores 8.1 out of 10.
