Silent Hill has spent nearly three decades locked in the same small town, same fog, same dread. Townfall breaks that pattern by moving the whole series into first person, sending you to a remote Scottish island named St. Amelia instead of the usual American town. And it brings along a cast of actors who have done film and television work.
The game puts you in the head of Simon, a man with a connection to St. Amelia who starts the game with almost nothing — just a handheld CRTV. That device replaces how earlier games used radio signals and environmental cues to build tension. It shows you where enemies are, lets you see fragments of the island’s past, and guides you through the world.
St. Amelia and the CRTV
St. Amelia is a deserted island that has been abandoned by its people. The game fills in what happened there before it fell into ruin, through narrative puzzles tied to the CRTV. These puzzles let you piece together the lives of the island’s former residents, adding color between the big plot beats.
When you spot an enemy with the CRTV, you have choices. You can rush in with melee weapons, block or swing, or step back and try to slip past unseen. Stealth is often the better path, since the first-person view limits what you can see and heightens the sense of danger. The CRTV helps there too — it lets you track movement even from behind cover, so you do not have to reveal yourself to figure out where enemies are hiding. You can also use objects in the environment to distract enemies and lure them away long enough to slip past.
Sound and Voice
The soundtrack is a dynamic one, built by Canadian musician Pilotpriest, who said it reacts to your actions and the enemies’ as well, shifting with the rise and fall of combat and stealth. The game leans on creaks, cries, and creepy noises.
The voice cast includes Emmy Award nominee Jovan Adepo, Emmy winner Terry O’Quinn, and Kezia Burrows, who appeared in Observation, one of developer Screen Burn’s previous titles. Adepo plays Simon, while O’Quinn plays Richard, a voice that calls Simon back to the island. Burrows plays Zoe, a former resident of St. Amelia whose voice reaches out to Simon through his CRTV.
What the Island Hides
The story is about more than monsters. It deals with introspection, loss, and the consequences of past decisions, with the island’s current state shaped by that history.
