Forza Horizon 4 turned Great Britain into a playground, then changed the weather on it every week.
Playground Games built an open-world racer set in a fictionalised version of Britain — Edinburgh, the Scottish Highlands, the Lake District, the Cotswolds — and released it on 2 October 2018 for Windows and Xbox One, after announcing it at Xbox’s E3 2018 conference. An enhanced version followed on Xbox Series X/S on 10 November 2020. It is the fourth Forza Horizon title and the eleventh instalment in the Forza series.
The hook is not the map. It is the clock.
Winter Freezes Derwentwater
Forza Horizon 4 runs a synchronised shared world. Every server holds up to 72 players, and every player on it gets the same conditions at the same moment. After a prologue that walks you through all four seasons, the world flips weekly — spring, summer, autumn, winter — with the switch landing Thursdays at 2:30 pm GMT.
A countdown clock warns you. When it hits zero, a short cinematic shows the old season turning into the new one. Players mid-event get the cutscene late.
The seasons are not decoration. Derwentwater freezes over in winter, and the ice becomes a road to parts of the map you cannot reach any other time of year.
750 Cars and a Route Creator
The garage holds over 750 licensed cars. Players buy in-game houses that unlock new items, cars and perks, including Horizon Promo and the ability to fast travel.
A route creator lets players build races on completely custom routes. The game also plays offline, which matters more than it sounds.

The game shipped with single player, multiplayer and co-operative play. Battle Royale arrived later, part of several content-expanding updates that also added new game modes.

That is the arc. Forza Horizon 4 sits in the middle of it, and it is the one that changed the formula rather than refining it.
The Delisting
Forza Horizon 4 was delisted from sale on 15 December 2024 across all platforms.
That is a hard fact and it should shape how you read everything above. A racing game lives on its servers and its shared world. The weekly season flip, the 72-player lobbies, the synchronised weather — none of that works if nobody can buy in. Delisting does not kill a game overnight, but it starts a clock of its own, and this one is running.
What the Seasons Actually Buy
Plenty of racers promise a living map. Most mean a day-night cycle and some rain. Forza Horizon 4 means a lake that is a wall in July and a shortcut in January.
The seasons are the whole argument, and they hold up because Playground tied them to traversal, not to looks. Winter does not just repaint the Highlands. It opens routes and closes others, and every player on the server gets the same version of that at the same second.
The 750-car garage is generous, but it is also the least interesting thing here. Car lists are a spreadsheet. A frozen lake is a design decision.
What Forza Horizon 4 Gets Right
Forza Horizon 4 is the best argument the series ever made for treating a map as a schedule rather than a backdrop. The shared world does the heavy lifting, the Thursday reset gives it a pulse, and the route creator hands the keys to the players.
Forza Horizon 5 followed on 9 November 2021 and carried the seasons forward. It did not have to invent them. This one did.
