Rocky’s Fall

Rocky returns from Moscow with his wife Adrian, brother-in-law Paulie, and trainer Tony “Duke” Evers. Back in the United States, he learns his accountant has emptied his bank accounts through bad real estate deals and unpaid taxes over six years. His mansion is mortgaged, his history as a loan shark has resurfaced, and his money is gone.

Tommy Gunn

A young fighter from Oklahoma named Tommy Gunn arrives in Philadelphia, and Rocky takes him under his wing. Tommy rises fast under Rocky’s training, becoming a top contender. The arrangement strains Rocky’s relationship with his own son, Robert, who grows distant while his father focuses on the young boxer.

Medical Troubles

Rocky sees a doctor and is diagnosed with cavum septi pellucidi, forcing him to retire from the ring. He sells his home and belongings to pay his debts, and he moves his family back to their old working-class neighborhood.

The Gym

Rocky visits Mighty Mick’s Gym, willed to him by his old trainer Mickey Goldmill. The gym has fallen into ruin, but Rocky draws inspiration from visions of himself and Mickey and decides to become a trainer himself.

Critical Reception

Critics did not warm to the script. Reviews targeted the writing, the characters, continuity errors, and medical inaccuracies. The film was widely seen as a weak ending to the series.

Box Office Numbers

Despite the poor reviews, Rocky V performed well commercially. It earned $119 million worldwide on a $30–42 million budget, though it became the lowest-grossing entry in the franchise.

The Verdict

Rocky V is a mixed bag. Stallone’s performance holds the center, but the writing and direction stumble badly. The film fails to honor its own rules about Rocky’s health, and Tommy Gunn’s arc feels rushed next to Rocky’s son’s growing distance.

Rocky V ends the series on a note of loss, and it earns a score of 5.5 out of 10.
