ShopMy’s Spotlights Let Creators Sell Sponsored Posts Directly From Their Own Posts

ShopMy raises millions to turn creator content into paid ads, letting brands sponsor existing posts rather than commission new ones.

ShopMy is betting that creators who post free content online will let brands turn it into paid ads — and the company just raised millions from venture capital firms to prove it.

The startup now has a partner network of 350,000 “curators” and tens of thousands of brands. Its new product, called Spotlights, takes existing creator posts and repurposes them as sponsored content. The format is already live within Meta’s Partnership Ads and TikTok’s Spark Ads, two marketing programs built around creator influence.

“Spotlights transforms creator marketing from a brand awareness channel to a conversion channel,” said ShopMy Co-Founder and CEO Harry Rein in a statement. “Brands can put a massive library of creator content to work as paid ads, reaching high-intent shoppers without the extra legwork.”

How Spotlights Works

ShopMy surfaces “proven-to-convert” creator content within those ad programs. Brands can then build Spotlight-based strategies across all stages of their campaigns. Creators can also enable “Instant Spotlights” to pre-approve requests from brands they mention.

The pitch is simple: instead of paying a creator to make a new post, brands pay to run an old one as a sponsored ad. The content already exists, and the platform already knows it performs well.

The Numbers Behind It

There is data to back up the idea. Meta has reported that creator-led Partnership Ads deliver 13% higher click-through rates compared to standard media. TikTok has claimed that its Spark Ads increase click-throughs and conversions by about 25%.

ShopMy cites these figures as evidence that creator content converts better than traditional advertising. The company also cites marketing firm Agentio’s concept of an “infinite creative engine.” To feed that engine, a high volume of creative is needed, and Spotlights can provide it.

MUTHA’s Case Study

ShopMy cited the skincare brand MUTHA as proof of the product’s efficacy. MUTHA reported a 55% return on ad spend uptick after employing Spotlights. All other brand partners who work with ShopMy now have the chance to produce similar results.

The case study is thin — one brand, one metric, no control group.

What ShopMy Is Building

ShopMy’s ecosystem depends on creators posting freely and brands paying to run that content. The company is asking creators to act as unpaid media publishers, while the brands get the distribution.

The Bigger Picture

ShopMy positions itself at the center of a creator marketing boom. Venture capital firms have poured money into the company, and its partner network has grown quickly.

The Spotlights format is a logical extension of that positioning. Instead of asking creators to create new content for brands, ShopMy is asking brands to pay to run content that already exists.

What We Make Of It

The move is clever. It solves a real problem for brands — the cost of producing custom creative at scale — by repurposing content that was created anyway.

It is also a bit cheeky. Creators who post for free are effectively subsidizing the ad inventory. The content is their own, but the revenue goes to the platform and the brands.

The MUTHA case study is the kind of early success story startups love to share. It shows the product works in practice, not just on paper. But one brand is not a trend.

ShopMy has raised millions while building its ecosystem. Whether creators agree to be unpaid media publishers remains to be seen.
