ModNation Racers puts players behind the wheel of a kart racer built entirely out of Lego-style building blocks. The PlayStation 3 and PSP version asks players to build cars, tracks, and racers themselves, then share them online with friends.

Building Cars
The car creator is simple to use. Players drag parts onto a chassis, change colors, and add stickers. There is no wrong way to build a vehicle. The result can look like a sports car, a monster truck, or a talking animal head — and the freedom to choose any of those options is part of what makes the creator so appealing.
Tracks
The track editor is just as open. Players lay down sections, add ramps, and place hazards. Sharing tracks online lets friends race each other’s creations.
Modes
The game includes a career mode, a championship mode, and a free-for-all mode. Each offers a different pace and set of challenges. Online play lets groups race together in real time.
Look and Sound
The graphics are bright and clear. The music stays cheerful throughout. Nothing here is trying to win awards for depth, but the presentation holds up well across both platforms.
PSP Port
The PSP version cuts some features but keeps the core loop intact. Players still build, race, and share. The controls hold up well on the smaller screen.

What Holds It Back
Some modes feel thin compared to similar racers. The car physics are simple, which suits the silly tone but limits the depth of skilled play.
Final Word
ModNation Racers scores 8.1 out of 10. The building tools and sharing system remain the strongest part of the package, even where the racing itself feels thin.
