Popeyes is betting that bigger is better, and it is doing so with a sandwich that is exactly what its name promises. The chain is rolling out the Honey Chicken Biscuit nationwide starting today, priced at $5. The new offering pairs a larger version of the brand’s signature buttermilk biscuit with chicken, served with two sachets of sweet honey sauce.
The launch comes as the fast-food chicken chain faces a rough stretch. Same-store sales fell 5.2% in the second quarter, marking its sixth straight quarterly decline. Executives at parent company Restaurant Brands International said during their quarterly earnings report that they expect the second half of this year to turn positive as the chain fixes “an incoherent value position.”
New Product Details
The Honey Chicken Biscuit is a straightforward product. It takes the chain’s existing buttermilk biscuit, makes it larger, adds chicken, and pairs it with honey sauce. The two sachets of honey sauce are the only new ingredient.
The company said its culinary team is “always looking for new ways to bring bold flavors together,” and noted that customers have long shared signature chicken and biscuits with honey combinations on social media. The chain framed the sandwich as proof that “some of the biggest ideas come from reimagining what’s already in our kitchens.”
Matt Rubin’s Statement
Chief Marketing Officer Matt Rubin offered a similar line in a statement. He said the chain’s approach is guided by quality and bold flavor, and that the culinary team is always looking for new ways to bring iconic items together. The Honey Chicken Biscuit, he said, brings the chain’s craveable chicken, its iconic buttermilk biscuit, and sweet honey sauce into one new sandwich.
The Anomaly Campaign
The sandwich arrives with a new marketing push. Popeyes launched the “That Chicken from Popeyes” campaign in late August, working with a new creative agency of record, Anomaly. The campaign draws on the chain’s signature “Love That Chicken from Popeyes” jingle and celebrates Popeyes’ Cajun flavors and hand-breading, to the “sounds, attitude and soul of a Real Louisiana Kitchen,” as the company put it.
The campaign is pitched as a bid to reassert the brand as the “best-tasting, best-value chicken in America.”
The Sales Picture
The timing is notable. Same-store sales fell 5.2% in the second quarter, marking the sixth straight quarterly decline. The chain’s executives have acknowledged the problem publicly, saying they expect the second half of this year to turn positive.
The $5 price point is a deliberate move. The sandwich is being sold at a fixed price across participating restaurants.
What This Means
Popeyes is not launching a new category or a radical product. It is taking three things customers already know — the biscuit, the chicken, and the honey sauce — and putting them together in a new package. The company is reaching for its core assets at a moment when sales are down.
The risk is low, the execution is simple, and the ingredients are proven. The question is whether customers treat it as a reason to visit or as a familiar stopgap.
Here is how the rollout breaks down:
- A larger version of the brand’s signature buttermilk biscuit
- Added chicken
- Two sachets of sweet honey sauce
The Honey Chicken Biscuit is available now at participating restaurants for $5.
