Valkyria Chronicles 4 sends Squad E into a war the Federation is losing. Bone-chilling blizzards, waves of Imperial soldiers, and the terrifying Valkyria stand between Commander Claude Wallace and victory. The game makes that desperation playable.

Claude Wallace and Squad E
Media.Vision developed Valkyria Chronicles 4, and Sega published it. It came to PlayStation 4 in Japan in March 2018, then worldwide that September on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Windows, and Xbox One. Stadia got it on December 8, 2020, and Amazon Luna on July 8, 2021.
The setup is lean. Claude Wallace, Kai Shulen, and Raz join the Federation Army to protect their home country of Gallia and avenge an Imperial attack on their hometown of Hafen. Kai vanishes during training, so his sister Leena takes his place under his name. Claude ends up commanding Squad E in the elite Ranger Corps.
Riley Miller Joins the Squad
Riley Miller, another childhood friend, joins later and distrusts Claude because he ran from a fire that killed her family. She comes around once he proves himself as a leader. The friction is thin, but it gives the squad a spine beyond the mission objectives.
The Grenadier Changes the Field
Valkyria Chronicles 4 keeps the strategy framework of the first three games and adds one real wrinkle: the Grenadier class. These soldiers fire mortar rounds, and if allied troops are nearby to feed them battlefield information, they can fire without being seen by hostile forces. It is a small change that rewards positioning instead of raw damage.
The Brave system handles the edge of defeat. When a soldier is near death, a fixed chance triggers Brave. Players then choose one of three outcomes: restore a Command Point and boost a nearby ally, counter the enemy’s attack if the unit went down on the enemy’s turn, or restore Action Points and let the unit move and attack once while invincible if it fell on the player’s turn.
Winter Arrives Early
Operation Northern Cross starts well. Squad E pushes through Imperial territory and breaks the Siegval Line, Schwartzgrad’s final defense. Along the way they fight Ausbruch, the elite Imperial tank unit led by Klaus Walz, who treats Claude as a worthy rival.
Then winter comes early. The unprepared Federation forces stall, supply lines stretch, and a massive Imperial counterattack routs them. Squad E flees to the coast and gets rescued by three advanced Federation snow cruisers. The turn is brutal, and the game has spent hours letting the advance feel like it was working.
A War Story That Holds Its Line
Valkyria Chronicles 4 does not reinvent the series. It refines it. The Grenadier and Brave systems add decisions at the moments that matter, and the Northern Cross collapse gives the story a defeat that feels earned rather than scripted. The childhood-friends framing is sentimental, and Riley’s grudge resolves faster than it should, but the squad’s arc from revenge to survival carries real weight.

The ports matter here. A tactical RPG lives or dies on how often you can pick it up, and the Switch version puts the whole campaign in a form that suits the genre.
What holds up is the structure. Valkyria Chronicles 4 understands that a war story needs a loss the player caused, not one a cutscene handed over. The early winter is that loss. It is the moment the game stops being a power fantasy about breaking defensive lines and becomes a story about getting your people home.
