Helldivers 2 asks four players to drop onto a hostile planet, call down an orbital strike, and try not to kill each other. Friendly fire is always on. That single rule defines Arrowhead Game Studios’ co-op shooter, and it is why the game has held a crowd for two years.

The Hellpod and the Stratagem
Players deploy from a Super Destroyer starship inside a transportation device called a Hellpod. Squads of up to four hit procedurally generated missions, complete objectives, and fight hordes of enemies. Operations run one to three levels. Difficulty scales from level 1, “Trivial,” to level 10, “Super Helldive.”
The core system is the Stratagem. Players execute a sequence of directional inputs to call in orbital strikes, supply drops, vehicles, and turrets. Four stratagems go into a loadout in advance, plus a Booster that affects the whole team. The inputs are simple. Doing them while a Terminid is chewing your leg is not.
Friendly fire is always on during missions. That is the design. A turret does not check who is standing behind it. A teammate’s orbital barrage does not ask questions. Helldivers 2 turns coordination into a survival mechanic, and it is the best thing the game does.
Terminids, Automatons and the Galactic War
The setting is the 22nd century. A century after the First Galactic War, the Federation of Super Earth harvests a resource called E-710 from the decomposing corpses of insectoid creatures. The bugs were genetically engineered and accelerated into what the game calls Terminids. Farms sit on colonized worlds. The farms fail.
The events of Helldivers 2 begin in 2184, after the Super Earth Armed Forces lose containment of the Terminids. At the same time, a mechanical army called the Automatons emerges, built by the defeated Cyborgs to take revenge on humanity. Super Earth declares war and mobilizes the Helldivers, its elite shock troops.
What separates this from most shooters is that the plot moves in real time. Major Orders and the collective decisions of the player base decide which planets are liberated and which are lost. The war is persistent and community-wide. The game does not hand you a campaign and a credits roll. It hands you a front line and a vote.
Malevelon Creek and Meridia
The early Automaton push ended in battles on Malevelon Creek — two months of fighting and heavy Helldiver casualties before the planet fell. A campaign against the Terminids failed, and the planet Meridia became a Terminid “Supercolony.” Players used a substance called Dark Fluid to trigger a planetary collapse, turning Meridia into a wormhole.
Then came The Gloom, an interstellar cloud of spores that terraformed planets inside Terminid space and birthed new Terminid variants. Out of the costly battles came the Democracy Space Station, a massive orbital battle station built to support Helldiver campaigns. Once it was finished, players gained the ability to vote on where to deploy it.
That is a lot of story for a game that does not include a dedicated single-player campaign. Helldivers 2 tells it through logs, notes, in-game broadcasts, and propaganda messages scattered across missions. Environmental storytelling carries the weight, and it mostly holds.
What Two Years of War Has Cost
Helldivers 2 arrived on 8 February 2024 for PlayStation 5 and Windows. The Xbox Series X/S version followed on 26 August 2025. It has sold over 20 million copies and grossed over $700 million in revenue, and it won and was nominated for a stack of awards. It is a live service game, and the numbers say the service is working.
The level cap tells a similar story. It started at 50, rose to 150 in April 2024, and reached 300 in August 2026. In the first days after release, studio staff watched players and influenced gameplay in real time — a stunt that only works when a game has an audience worth watching.
Helldivers 2 is a live service player versus environment (PvE) shooter game played primarily from a third-person perspective.
The case against Helldivers 2 is real. It does not include a dedicated single-player campaign. The procedurally generated missions repeat their shapes. A persistent war means the story moves whether you log in or not, and a player who steps away for a month returns to a map they do not recognize. For a game built on collective action, that is both the hook and the tax.
And the friendly fire, the thing that makes the game sing, is also the thing that makes it exhausting. It demands voice chat, patience, and a squad that will forgive you for dropping a 500kg bomb on their heads.
None of that changes the verdict. Helldivers 2 is the rare live service shooter with a point of view — managed democracy as a joke the game never winks at, and a war that belongs to the people playing it. The Stratagem system is the sharpest input mechanic in the genre. The galactic war is the smartest use of a player base since anyone started counting.
