Two small heroes, one wooden box, and a lot of throwing. That is most of what happens in Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers on NES, and it works.

Throwing Boxes

Chip and Dale spend most of their time picking up boxes and throwing them at enemies. Players can also spring upon boxes to rise higher, or set them one on top of another to reach new platforms. It is a simple idea, but the level designs keep finding fresh ways to use it, moving from tight passages to high drops and rises.

Playing Together

Playing alone, the game moves at a steady, moderate pace. Bring in a second player as Chip or Dale, though, and everything changes. Working together opens faster paths through stages, but it also brings bumps between characters, stolen boxes, and the occasional accidental strike against your own partner. That friction is part of what makes it pleasant.

Sound and Sight

The stages take their look from the cartoon series, with secret passages, toy stores, and kitchens shown in bright, clear color. The small figures of Chip and Dale carry real character despite their size on screen. The music is pleasing enough that certain tunes stay with the player long after the game ends.

Where It Falls Short

The difficulty rises and falls without much order. Some stages pass quickly, while others punish small mistakes with repeated deaths and long returns to earlier points. The battles against larger foes, in particular, can feel more like tests of memory than true tests of skill. The game never explains its own rules clearly, so a first attempt brings some doubt.

There are no long pauses between stages on the original hardware, but the game’s short length means the pleasure can grow less once the novelty of the throwing of boxes grows small.

Key Numbers

  • Platform: NES
  • Genre: Platform game for two players
  • Main characters: Chip and Dale
  • Core action: throwing and piling boxes
  • Critical score, as generally agreed: 7.4/10

Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers still holds up as a solid game worth playing more than once, especially with a second player at hand. It is not without rough spots, and its harder stages will test the patience of players who expect an even challenge throughout. But the charm of its two leads and the clever use of the throwing of boxes carries it past its weaker moments.

This writer’s own score sits at 7 of 10, just below the wider general agreement of 7.4/10.
