Super Return of the Jedi on SNES Peaks Early: Forest Chase Thrills, Later Stages Repeat — 7.5/10

A cartridge review of Super Return of the Jedi: three stages, a swift forest chase, and music that carries the moon scenes well.

A vehicle rushes through a forest moon while trees rush past in a scene of swift and dangerous motion.

Super Return of the Jedi puts players through three stages drawn from the film’s final act. A forest chase on the moon gives way to ground fighting, then a final push against enemy soldiers. The game asks more of quick hands than of deep design.

The Forest Chase

The forest chase stage stands above the rest. Trees rush past fast, and staying clear of them takes real timing. This part of the game carries the strongest sense of motion and danger.

The ground fighting that follows does not match that pace. The player character feels less quick to turn and act, and enemies repeat their moves often enough that later tries turn into simple repeats rather than new tests of skill.

Music and Art

The music draws on the film’s score, and it holds up well across all three stages. The art is solid for a cartridge of its time, with clear character sprites and scenes that place the action firmly on the forest moon.

Where Super Return of the Jedi falls short is variety. Three stages is not much to build a full game around, and the challenge grows fast once players reach the second and third parts. Extra lives run out fast, so one mistake late in a run can send a player back to the very start.

The SNES was built to handle quick action well, and the forest chase stage puts that power to good use. The later stages do not carry the same feel of motion. There, the design turns more on repeat attempts than on quick play.

Even so, the controls answer well throughout, even as the challenge grows harder. Strikes and moves made by the player character land when they should, so failure feels earned rather than forced on the player by the game itself. Few cartridges of the period offered controls this steady under pressure.

Those who know the film will see the care put into bringing its key scenes to life. The forest chase alone makes a case for picking up the cartridge, even if the rest of the game does not hold that same energy all the way through. Players who finish the game once may find little reason to return, given how short the full run proves to be.

Key Numbers

  • Stages: 3
  • Source material: Return of the Jedi’s final act
  • Score: 7.5 of 10

Super Return of the Jedi is a short game that peaks early and asks a great deal of its players by the end. It is worth a look for its forest chase and its strong music, even if the later stages do not reach the same heights.
